The Kleiss Difference is in the Prototyping
~ Helping you discover your gear ~
Prototyping is beneficial in verifying suitability for your intended gear function. Your gear doesn’t exist yet.
There are several elements that need to be considered in the development of your new gear such as
• Duty cycle
• Physical environment
• Chemical environment
• Tooth flank temperature
• Stiffness
We can arrive at a general indication of suitability, but actual performance under expected operating conditions is the only way to truly determine suitability. Through prototyping we can sort out the variables to demonstrate success.
A Successful Prototype Example
Shown is a hob cut prototype gear for one of our customers in the automotive industry. At Kleiss Gears we were confident of our design and the chosen material, unfilled nylon 6/6. It had the strength for the intended application, but we weren’t sure how it would wear and perform at very high and low temperatures. Before investing in tooling we decided to cut a few samples without concern for coring or any other features, since we were only interested in wear and survivability at temperature extremes. The pictured gears survived continuous loading for 2 million cycles at 260 -degrees F and 1 million cycles at room temperature with less than 30% wear on the cut pinion and virtually no wear on the gear. This provided an invaluable insight into the suitability of this material for the intended function.
