The inspection on the right is from a gear with incorrect shrinkage. A graph of the measured points overlaid on the nominal gear is shown. We measure all the teeth because any tooth could be different in a molded gear. For this inspection there are four sets of 16 teeth each overlaid on each other in the graphical boxes. The gear on the left is the one we designed and molded to correct the shrinkage error and improve the gear mesh. The maximum involute error has been reduced from .0024 inches to .0004 inches. You can see that we have extended the tooth tip diameter to engage more completely with the mating gear.
